Nyungwe Top View Hotel, situated high on a hill near the Nyungwe Forest, offers stunning viewsWhen you arrive, you'll be met by your private guide and 4WD who'll be with you for the rest of your time in Rwanda. You’ll begin your journey through the beautiful countryside on the 4-5 hour journey to Nyungwe. You may stop at the national museum in Butare along the way to stretch your legs, and learn a little of the history of this fascinating country. In the afternoon you'll approach the forest. It has a distinctly rainforest feel to it - and is home to 13 different primate species and about 75 species of mammal. Spend the next two nights at Nyungwe Top View Hotel. The selling point of this simple lodge is the absolutely fantastic views which it enjoys over the forest - on clear days you can even see as far as Lake Kivu.
Nyungwe Top View Hotel, situated high on a hill near the Nyungwe Forest, offers stunning viewsSpend the next morning tracking colobus monkeys watching their acrobatic skills as they leap from tree to tree! Keep your eyes peeled for the other primates including grey-cheeked mangabeys and l'Hoest's monkeys. In the afternoon take part in the canopy walk - a chance to see the forest from a whole other perspective! The whole walk is about 200m long, with 90m being completely suspended over the canopy - giving you a real bird-eye view of the tree tops.
Cormoran Lodge is a new lodge on the shores of Lake Kivu...After breakfast start your journey up the lake shore to Kibuye. This drive is absolutely stunning - winding roads hug the lake shore and hills making for some fantastic photo opportunities. You'll be met with huge smiles and waves from the local children as you pass by. Perhaps stop for lunch along the way so you can taste the local delicacy - goat kebabs! You'll arrive in the afternoon to spend three nights at Cormoran Lodge. This small lodge is rustic and simple, but friendly and relaxing. In the evenings, sit and watch the sun set over the lake. Be sure to try some of their freshly caught tilapia - a specialty on the lodge's menu.
Gorilla Mountain View Lodge...The next morning your driver will meet you at the hotel and you'll start on your short journey to the Volcanoes National Park. Wind your way through the beautiful countryside and you'll understand why they call this “the land of one thousand hills"! You'll spend the next 3 nights at Gorilla Mountain View Lodge. This simple lodge is friendly and comfortable, and provides a good base from which to explore the national park.
Gorilla Mountain View Lodge...After an early breakfast you'll make your way with your guide to the park headquarters where you'll be briefed on the golden monkeys you'll be tracking. Tracking these primates is generally easier than the gorillas, but the altitude can make it more strenuous than usual . In the afternoon you are free to do as you please - your driver will be at your disposal, so he can advise the possible options in the area. For example, you may want to drive out to some local markets and try your hand at bargaining!
Gorilla Mountain View Lodge...It will be another early start as you head to the park's headquarters for a briefing on the mountain gorillas and how to behave around them. In a group of 8 people you'll be lead by an experienced park ranger to a designated family of gorillas. The hour you spend with them will go incredibly quickly - and is an experience you will never forget. Again you'll have the afternoon at leisure - perhaps take a drive out to some nearby lakes, or maybe just relax at the hotel and enjoy the beautiful scenery and birdlife!
After a final breakfast it's time to bid the forest farewell and start the journey back to Kigali. From here either catch an international flight home, or continue on to another destination!
