Maasai Mara Game Reserve is the northern extension of the Serengeti plains. Watered by the Mara River and its tributary the Talek. The Park occupying about 320 sq. km.
Maasai Mara is the perfect wildlife sanctuary. The temperature is never too hot or too cold. The rolling plains are not covered by too much vegetation so that the animals are never too hard to find.
The Maasai that live within close proximity of the park enjoy a peaceful co-existence with the wildlife.
The greatest animal spectacle in the world - The Great Migration, occurs here. The movement of wildebeest and zebras between the Mara and the Serengeti.
Location: Maasai Mara Game Reserve is located in South-West Kenya on the border with Tanzania.
Best time to visit: July to October.
Birdlife: Rich in variety of species, including birds of prey such as vultures commonly found in Masai Mara and other Kenya parks. Other parks in Kenya such as Lake Nakuru however have a more diverse birdlife than the Mara.
Wildlife: The annual wildebeest migration, this spectacle sees more than 1.3 million wildebeests , 250,000 Zebra and 300,000 Thomson's gazelles trek. As in all ecosystems the vegetation and types of animals you find are closely correlated. Other fauna in the park include Rhino, Giraffe, Topi, Elephant, Lion, Leopard, Cheetah, Jackals, Hyena, Hippo and much more.
Access: from Nairobi by Road: 270 kms (5.5-6.5 hours)
Air: 60 minutes, daily flights.
To do: Game drive, walking safaris, cultural tours with the maasai, Hot air Ballooning safari.
Accommodation: There are many Luxurious lodges in the park due to the large number of visitors. The campsites in and around the park are also many and very well kept.
